Research Direction

To establish an effective research and learning environment supported by up to date facilities, with the aim of delivering successful academic programs and research projects. Working with talented geoscientists from around the world to address specific petroleum generation issues related to oil-prone coals, terrestrial-derived organic matter, depositional facies, reservoir characterization and thermal maturation. Maximizing both individual contribution, yet benefiting from the power of integration of various expertise within the geoscience discipline such as Petroleum Geology, Geophysics, Sedimentology, Stratigraphy, Structural Geology, Basin Modeling as well as Petroleum Geochemistry.

Research Accomplishments and Findings

Together with dedicated students, we have studied & characterized major source rock types of NW Borneo basins, performed facies analysis, carried out analogue studies, stratigraphic correlation between onshore and offshore petroleum province. Established the first MSc Petroleum Geology Programme that has attracted students from around the world. We are utilizing state of the art software such as PETREL, PetroMod, etc in combination with advanced source rock evaluation techniques (e.g. GC-MS, Py-GC, SRA, VR analyses) and reservoir characterisation methodologies (e.g. Interactive Petrophysics) that have been applied in a number of projects and research areas.

Group members, through integration of research projects carried out by MSc/PhD students, have published a number of ISI/Scopus-cited papers. Findings of the research in source rock evaluation have direct implications to current ongoing petroleum exploration activities in the offshore areas of Sarawak & Sabah. Consequently, we have been awarded consultation work by oil and service companies including offering training courses to staff of international oil companies that are partners to PETRONAS. We received support from oil & service companies in the form of scholarship to students, research grant, workstations & softwares.
