RECENTLY, the country was shocked by the existence of illegal mining activities of rare earth elements (REE) that allegedly took place in a state in the north of Peninsular Malaysia. REE, which contains 17 important elements and is indispensable in the manufacture of various equipment, has a high price and demand in the market. Therefore, it is not surprising if there are parties doing illegal mining to steal the metal. Many may imagine that mining REEs that also contain radioactive elements such as Uranium and Thorium requires heavy machinery and advanced equipment, but the fact is not.
