Department of Geology, Faculty of Science, Universiti Malaya Geophysics Team Showcases Expertise at International Geothermal Week–Malaysia 2025

Ulu Slim, Perak – 7 October 2025

The Geophysics team from the Department of Geology, Faculty of Science, Universiti Malaya (UM) participated in the International Geothermal Week–Malaysia (IGWM) 2025, held at the Ulu Slim Hot Spring, Perak. The event brought together researchers, industry professionals, and government representatives to promote awareness and understanding of Malaysia’s geothermal potential.

During the event, the UM Geophysics team successfully conducted a live demonstration of the electrical resistivity method using the ABEM LS2 Terrameter. This method is one of the key geophysical techniques used in geothermal exploration to investigate subsurface resistivity variations, which help identify geothermal reservoirs and related geological structures.

The demonstration attracted considerable interest from visitors, including a visit from YB Salina Samsudin, ADUN Behrang, who was briefed on the significance of geophysical investigations in geothermal energy development. The interaction highlighted the importance of applied geoscience research in supporting Malaysia’s renewable energy initiatives.

UM’s participation was part of a broader collaborative showcase alongside Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), which demonstrated the magnetic method, and Northern Geo Solution, which presented the gravity method. Together, these demonstrations provided a comprehensive overview of the principal geophysical approaches utilized in geothermal studies.

The event served as an excellent platform for knowledge sharing and public engagement, underscoring the critical role of geophysics in advancing sustainable energy exploration. The Universiti Malaya Geophysics team’s involvement reflects the university’s continued commitment to scientific excellence, interdisciplinary collaboration, and contributions toward Malaysia’s clean energy goals.
